“Ghost Alert!” was the first thing I heard when I picked up the phone. A case had come in, from a family living in Long Island that had all the signs of being a tough case. A brief summary of the situation was this; The people involved were Kevin and his girlfriend Anna, Kevin’s mother Maria and her boyfriend Jack… all victims. Kevin’s father Roberto and Grandmother Cecilia are the people causing the problem. Both Roberto and Cecilia were active in Santeria. Due to a family fallout, they were seeking vengeance on the rest of the family.
Santeria is a form of religion similar to Voodoo. If a person or family is on the receiving end of a Santerian curse, expect trouble; Expect a long, uphill battle. That’s what this case turned out to be. This case proved to be a trial of patience and frustration not only for the family but also for the investigators involved.
The main problem with a case dealing with Santeria is that unless you can get to the root of the problem, in this case by talking to the individuals that invoked the curse, very little can be done to help the victims. Due to the fact that neither the father, Roberto, nor grandmother, Cecilia were willing to sit down and try to resolve this issue. All the information obtained from the victims indicated this could potentially turn out to be extremely violent and possibly life threatening, it was decided the best form of resolution for the family was immediate church intervention. Look for more on that a little later.
Because two separate couples, living in two separate locations were the victims in this case, I’ll explain what each couple experienced separately, then tie in all the similarities afterwards. Keep in mind the family makeup in this case… Kevin, Maria (mother), Roberto (father), and Cecilia (grandmother) are all blood relatives and Anna and Jack were significant others to Kevin and Maria. This will come into play as the two couple’s stories are unraveled.
Kevin and Anna’s story is this:
Kevin and Anna had been dating for quite some time while Kevin, an artist, was living at home with his father and grandmother. Roberto was an alcoholic and often became violent and abusive, which played a large role in the divorce of Roberto and Maria. Kevin knew that is Roberto and Cecilia were active in Santeria but, like any other religion, had no reason to fear. What Kevin did know was that after the divorce, Roberto became more and more spiteful and hostile towards Maria and himself.
Cecilia was, as most mothers are towards their sons, fully supportive of Roberto… the stage was now set. All was well until one night when Roberto again became violent and began physically abusing Kevin who, in self-defense, did everything in his power to stop Roberto from hurting him. Within a day or two after that incident, Kevin moved out of his father’s house and moved in with Anna. Anna, a cook in a local restaurant, was living in a very small apartment in a nice residential neighborhood consisting of houses all refurbished as multifamily dwellings.
Almost immediately after Kevin moved in with Anna, strange occurrences began. The activity started off low key but quickly grew to be very ominous, threatening, and dangerous. Little did Kevin and Anna know that when THEY started experiencing unnatural activities, Maria and Jack ALSO began experiencing unexplainable and terrifying occurrences? Kevin and Anna began having very heated and enraged arguments which in itself is not uncommon with anyone from time to time, but they soon began realizing that these arguments, and the internal feelings of pure rage, would only take place when they were IN the house. Moments after walking outside, they would look at each other in a way as if to wonder “What just happened?” They did what any normal person would do, rationalized these experiences away as cabin fever or something similar. Cabin fever could not explain what began happening next.
Because their apartment was so small, and the only bedroom was being used as storage, they slept on a sleeper-sofa in the tiny living room that was just big enough to accommodate the bed, one reclining chair, and a television. Even though it was only the month of May, it was very hot in the apartment and with no air conditioning, getting to sleep was difficult at times. They did, however, often fall asleep to the TV in bed… when one night it suddenly occurred to her… she wondered how these strange, moving black shadows could be caused by the TV. Well, the black shadows weren’t being made by the TV, she discovered that when she continued seeing them after she’d turn the TV off. They were there, she didn’t know how or why, but what she found out was they were after HER.
Kevin lay next to her in bed, asleep, unaware of what she was seeing. She would try to wake him up to show him and he simply could not be awakened. After several relatively uneventful nights, things took a turn for the worse. One night, it was about 2 AM, both Kevin and Anna were sound asleep. Once again, it was a warn night and they were both lying face down on the bed, one of her arms was hanging off the side of the bed, her hand near the floor. Suddenly, Anna awoke to a slight stinging feeling on her fingers, she sat up and turned the lights on to find her fingers were bleeding, but could find no cuts or scrapes to explain where the blood was coming from. Feeling very shaken and uneasy, she got out of bed cleaned herself up and then went back to bed, trying to fall back asleep… Kevin was still sound asleep. This was just the start of it.
Several nights came and went with fairly typical activity such as Anna being “bitten”, as she referred to it, on her fingers and toes. She would describe the events of the night before with Kevin, who was becoming increasingly concerned but also a little skeptical. Kevin, not knowing who to talk to about this, decided to talk to his mother in hopes that she could make some sense of it. Maria then told Kevin what was taking place at her house… but she wasn’t experiencing anything, Jack was the one taking the brunt of it all. As they traded stories, they realized the only “rational” explanation, Roberto. Roberto was extremely hostile towards both Kevin and Maria and had the ability, through Santeria, to make them as miserable as he was. Both Kevin and Maria confronted Roberto about this (which, in fact, was a big mistake) and ended up, once again fighting and arguing with him.
The following night, Kevin and Anna were asleep in bed when all of a sudden, Anna felt the force of an invisible weight on her body that completely immobilized her. Unable to move or speak, she then started to be dragged to the head of the bed, towards the back couch cushions. Struggling to make some kind of noise, she was being pulled under the bed BETWEEN the bed and the back sofa cushions, basically into the box of the sofa. It really didn’t seem physically possible but it was happening. Finally, Anna was able to let out a scream, waking Kevin up to find her waist down into the bed. No sooner did Kevin wake up than the attack ceased and neither of them slept the rest of the night. He told Anna that while all that was happening to her, he was actually aware of it, in a semiconscious way but was “dreaming that two creatures were holding me down”, face down into the bed, unable to move. What they both encountered was phantomania, or psychic paralysis, which commonly occurs during attacks of this nature.
Totally out of answers and trying to figure out what to do, Kevin began looking for help. A week later, after the church had denied getting involved and still looking for someone to help them, they were both at wits end. One day Kevin and Anna got in an argument, not a bad one, but they had stopped talking to each other. The following morning, Kevin got up at his usual 4:30 AM to go to work and noticed that Anna was not in bed. When he walked towards the bathroom, he noticed the door was closed, he thought that Anna had spent the night there because of the argument. He turned the handle and started to open the door but the door stopped, as if blocked by something. Pushing hard on the door, it opened revealing Anna slumped on the floor with one end of her bra wrapped around her neck and the other end wrapped around the inside doorknob. In a sheer panic, Kevin untangled her from the mess and, luckily, was able to wake her up. Helping her into the kitchen, he asked Anna what happened. She described to him what she remembered.
She got up at some point during the night to go to the bathroom and after sitting down, was picked up by an unseen force and thrown head first into the door. Her next recollection was Kevin trying to waking her up and pulling her off the bathroom floor. That was it! Kevin WAS going to find someone to help. Activity had started only about a month before all this and became so serious, so quickly, further delay could be too dangerous.
“Ghost Alert!” Kevin was finally in contact with us and after giving the initial interview and hearing these incredible details, we asked him to have his mother and Jack write a testimonial statement of what they were experiencing. It didn’t take long to determine these poor people were the victims of a Santerían curse and unless action was taken quickly, matters could become MUCH worse. The statement of what Maria and Jack were experiencing would only help provide further reasoning for getting the church intervention necessary. The following is a condensed version of a report submitted by Kevin during the initial interview. This report, written by Maria, states what has been taking place to her and her boyfriend Jack.
“Shortly after Jack and I met, he started seeing black shadows and would tell me that they would beat him up during the night. He used to tell me this but I didn’t think anything of it, I would find it strange. I moved into another apartment and he used to come over and the minute he would get there, he would say that he felt uncomfortable and that he wanted to leave. He would leave and come back a while later. He would say that he didn’t know what was wrong, because once he got back to my apartment, he wanted to leave again.”
“Once he was sitting down at the dinner table and before my eyes and the kids, it looked like someone pushed him off the chair. He landed on the floor. He looked like they were choking him. His hands were at his throat, he was gagging. I felt helpless, I couldn’t help him. Finally, I was desperate, I started praying. I got Holy Water and sprinkled it all over him. All of a sudden I heard him say, ‘Don’t pray, I don’t like it when you do that.’ But it was a weird kind of voice. Finally he came back to himself. I asked him what happened, he said all he remembered was that someone pushed him off the chair. Twice more or less, the same thing happened where he was thrown off the chair.”
“He was scared to go into my apartment because of all the things that were happening to him. Once I was at work and he came to my job to tell me he was hungry. He asked did I cook at home and I told him yes, to go home and eat. He said he was scared to go by himself but he did it anyway. Later on I said to myself, I shouldn’t have let him go. About an hour later he came back to my job. I was shocked, he looked like a madman, and his face was all distorted. He was scared. When I saw him I couldn’t believe it, his shirt was in shreds. It looked like he had a bad fight with someone. I asked him what happened. He said that when he served his food, he was eating standing up because he was scared and nervous that something would happen to him. He says a while later his plate flew off. He felt someone pushed him. He says that when he came to his senses, he was on the floor all beat up, aching. The cat we had was next to him, licking his arm.”
“This problem got so bad I started looking for some help. I would go to psychics and fortune tellers, they would clean him, he would get better for a few days and a few days later the same things would happen. I guess by trying to get help from so many places and so many people it seems we have been able to help ourselves a little. At least I learned a few things. By sprinkling Holy Water on him and praying, he does better. But now they bother him when I am not around”
“Once he felt sick to his stomach, he said he was very uncomfortable. He says he went home in the middle of the night, he got up and threw up. He said when he looked there were a lot of big flies in his throw up, some of them still alive.
“A lot of times he understands clearly what they tell him, ‘leave her alone’, ‘don’t help her, if you do we are going to kill you’. They talk to him in Spanish. Every time they come, they always say the same thing, or they’ll say ‘You don’t understand’, they will curse and they will tell him ‘we told you to leave her alone, we don’t want you here, leave’
“About a week ago we had an argument, I told him to leave and I was pretty mean with him. He always gets beat up when he’s with me. For two days we were arguing. The day I told him to leave he says that those shadows that usually beat him up were singing and dancing and celebrating. They left and didn’t beat him up. Another time we had an argument. He was on the way home in the car when he heard someone say ‘what we wanted was accomplished’ he heard the car door open. When he looked, his back door was open. He had to park the car to close his door.”
“One day he was in the basement and I went down, he asked me “were you here all the along?’ I said no, I just got here. He said, but I was talking to you. As I started to move this wood you said ‘don’t put it there, it looks better on that side.’ I told him I wasn’t even in the basement. He got scared and said ‘let’s get out of here’ He is scared of going down to the basement himself, of going outside in the dark”
“Once I was doing dishes and he was reading the paper at the table. All of a sudden I saw him put his hands to his face. I thought something went into his eye. I kept asking him what was wrong. Finally he said to me “why did you slap my face?’ I said ‘Oh my God, are you crazy? I didn’t slap you.’ It was hard convincing him that it wasn’t me.”
“There’s more to this story, things I cannot remember now, but eventually they all come back. Is just so strange and incredible. I wish I could lead a normal life like some many people. What I find even stranger is the fact that more or less the same things are happening to my son Kevin and his girlfriend Anna.”
After obtaining the testimony from all the individuals concerned, coming up with a concrete conclusion was fairly simple. Roberto, being the bitter, spiteful man he is, and Cecilia, there to help him, placed a curse on their family to bring them as much misery and solitude as possible. The means to achieve this was to not, in fact, directly influence or affect his immediate family, but to direct the attacks at their significant others in hopes of pulling them apart. Both Jack and Anna were violently attacked numerous times in this attempt.
Once a firm understanding was held, all the evidence and testimony was gathered, and reports and summarizations were completed, it was time to attempt to bring closure, as quickly as possible due to the nature of the case. The family was instructed on who to contact within the church, a priest who handles these types of affairs in their area. All the accumulated paperwork was deliver to the priest and we were told that he would take the case and help the family. Elated, we contacted Kevin to relay the news and give them the point of contact information, this is when the investigator’s role switches from investigator to more the mediator and support structure for the family should any need arise. Also at his point in time, the investigator should stop actively contacting the family, unless of a crisis arises, allowing the family to talk directly to the priest handling their case.
About a month without hearing from the family, after the case was handed over to the church, the family contact us again. Normally that’s not a good sign, meaning activity has started back up again or something similar has gone wrong… this call was par for the course. The family stated that they had been in contact, numerous times. With the priest and after reading the information given to him, he traveled to their house, talked with them all face to face and agreed with the fact that they were in trouble. He performed a blessing on the house and everyone involved, the first step the church usually takes in the process of resolution, and soon afterwards, left. Unfortunately, the blessing did not work. The family called the priest about a week later and was informed that he was out of the country. When he returned, he contacted the family and discussed further options… options that never were acted on. That’s when they called us back.
We contacted the priest and discussed what would be done and why there was a delay and were told that, basically, it was held up in red tape. Unfortunately, there was, at that point in time, not much more we could do aside from instructing them on different methods of protecting themselves… our hands were tied. The family required church intervention and we were as much at its mercy as they were. We contacted Kevin and told him what was taking place, or not taking place, and assured him that he should call if any crisis arose or if he just need to talk… to understand. After several months of calling the family, calling the priest, and waiting, Kevin called, saying he found a priest in his immediate area that agreed to help and thanked us for our help. We were relieved that someone else was willing to help and told him that should he, for any reason, need to call again to do so.
Regretfully, no outcome of the family’s situation has ever been known. What I do know is this: No contact from a family is sometimes a good thing, it means that there is no NEED to call. It is extremely frustrating from not only the family’s point of view but also from a demonology point of view, that such a outright evil and destructive force such as what Kevin, Anna, Maria, and Jack were dealing with was not acted upon more quickly as was shown necessary. I think of this family often, wishing them the best, and trusting that the forces that we did the right thing is assisting them.
