The Warrens investigated a case on West Pittston, Pennsylvania where Jack and Janet Smurl were the victims of demonic possession. Janet was the first to experience supernatural occurrences in the duplex house. What first started out as voices turned into physical altercations with demons. Electrical fixtures fell from the ceiling, Janet was dragged out of bed, and the family levitated while in bed. In addition to these happenings, the family dog even materialized to move through doors and walls.
The worst event was the succubus attack on Jack Smurl. This was a physical and sexual attack on Jack that was designed to insult the birth cycle of Jesus. During this happening, a beautiful woman descended the stairs and came closer to Smurl. When it had fully approached, the woman changed into a skeletal slime-covered hag and attacked him.
When called in to help, Ed Warren performed a kind of religious provocation, hoping to make the demon(s) expose itself. Using holy water and religious music, Ed Warren commanded the demon to manifest. During this time, the TV (which was not plugged in) turned on, objects moved around the room, and doors open and shut.
The Warrens explain that this family was an All-American kind of family – they had never delved into the Occult, used Ouija boards, or anything of the like and yet they were still attacked by demons, who followed them from town to town. Ed Warren states that this is because they were chosen ones, whose faith was so strong that God could prove to the devil that even though he could attack them, their loyalty to God would never falter.
